From an email I just received from the Sierra Club:
Despite the loud rhetoric coming from Newt Gingrich and the pro-drilling crowd, we can't drill our way out of our energy problems.
The truth is that the U.S. sits on less than 3 percent of the world's oil reserves. Even if we drill every corner of America, the oil will only amount to a drop in the bucket and won't have an impact on prices.
Big Oil is trying to call the shots but there are better solutions like strong fuel economy standards and renewable energy. It's important we continue to tell Nancy Pelosi and Congress to stand firm and bring these solutions to Americans.
Not only will more drilling simply line the pockets of Big Oil which is already raking in record profits, it simply won't solve our problems:
- The Government's Energy Information Administration estimates it would take around a decade to get new oil online, and would not significantly reduce gas prices.
- The number of new offshore drilling permits has tripled while the Bush administration has been in office and yet we're also paying triple what we were in 2001.
- With less than 3% of the world's oil, we simply don't have enough to make an impact.
Speaker Pelosi is taking drilling supporters to task for holding up clean energy solutions and trying to force a vote on what she rightly calls a "hoax". She needs to hear from you that you want her to continue moving America forward with sensible energy policies.
